The Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament
What is L.E.S.T. and why is it so important?

The Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (L.E.S.T.) is one of the best events in which Lutheran schools in the Northwest Lutheran School District participate.  In fact, we are not aware of any other schools, both private and public, that hold a 5th-8th grade tournament of this caliber or magnitude.

Christian Values

L.E.S.T. is based on the value of Christian education.  Through the emphasis of using God-given talents, students show their love and praise of Him.  The primary goal of the tournament is to provide an academic, athletic, and recreational tournament that promotes:
  • God-given talents
  • Fun
  • Skill development
  • Fair play
  • Fellowship with other Lutheran school students
History

The L.E.S.T. began in 1962 with four other Portland area schools.  This first tournament was a boy's basketball tournament.  Later a volleyball competition was added for girls.  As the word began to spread, schools from other areas wanted to be a part of it.  They traveled by train or bus to Concordia College (now university), and Luther Hall was transformed from classrooms to a dormitory for visiting teams.  The competition has grown to include 15 individual and team events.  The tournament is now proud to host 1,000 students from as many as 21 schools traveling from Montana, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and California.

Community Spirit

Our whole student body is encouraged to cheer on our Pilgrim Panther L.E.S.T. participants each second week in February.  It is a wonderful time to encourage our 5th-8th grade participants, inspire your own child to academic and physical excellence, have fun with your family, and draw close to the families who attend our school.
